Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes & Trekking Guide

Conquer the Roof of Africa & World’s Tallest Free-Standing Mountain (5,895m)

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Rising to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. A climb to Uhuru Peak crosses a remarkable sequence of ecological zones, from cultivated foothills and montane rainforest to heath, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit.

Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, but altitude and long days make it a serious physical challenge. Routes such as Machame, Lemosho, and Marangu each offer a different itinerary and camping or hut experience. Allowing more days on the mountain can give your body valuable time to acclimatize; the right route depends on your fitness, schedule, and preferences.

Climbers are supported by local mountain guides, cooks, and porters who help make the expedition possible. Careful preparation, suitable clothing, a steady pace, and listening to your guide are essential parts of a safer climb. We can help you choose a route and prepare an itinerary for your dates.

Essential guidance on Kilimanjaro climbing routes, physical preparation, gear, and summit success

The 7 or 8-day Lemosho Route and 7-day Machame Route boast the highest summit success rates (over 90%–95%). Their gradual ascent profiles follow the essential "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization rule, giving your body ample time to adapt to decreasing oxygen levels.
No technical mountaineering skills, ropes, crampons, or ice axes are required. Mount Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trekking peak. However, it is an extremely strenuous high-altitude hike that demands good physical cardiovascular fitness, stamina, and mental endurance.
We provide heavy-duty 4-season mountain sleeping tents, thick sleeping mattresses, dining tents with tables and chairs, fresh nutritious meals prepared by our mountain chef, and emergency oxygen tanks with pulse oximeters. You should bring personal layered thermal clothing, waterproof jacket/trousers, a -10°C to -20°C sleeping bag, broken-in trekking boots, and headlamps. Rental gear is readily available in Arusha.
In compliance with ethical porter treatment (KPAP guidelines), each climber is supported by a dedicated local team of 3 to 4 mountain crew members, including certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) lead guides, assistant guides, a summit chef, and porters who transport all communal and camping equipment.
The warmest and clearest trekking conditions occur from January through mid-March, and from late June through October. These dry seasons offer low precipitation, clear summit visibility, and comfortable trail conditions on all routes.
Most climbs take five to nine days on the mountain, depending on the route and itinerary. Longer itineraries generally allow more time for acclimatization; discuss the options with your operator when choosing a climb.
Build cardiovascular fitness and leg strength with regular hiking, walking, and endurance exercise before your trip. Practice with the boots and daypack you plan to use, and consult a healthcare professional about your individual readiness for high-altitude trekking.
Altitude illness can occur when the body has not adapted to reduced oxygen at elevation. A gradual itinerary, steady pace, hydration, and following your guides' instructions can help reduce risk. Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell; descending is the appropriate response when symptoms are concerning.
Machame and Lemosho are camping routes with different approaches and itinerary options, while Marangu uses mountain huts. Routes also vary in scenery, duration, and acclimatization profile, so compare the full itineraries before choosing.
Climb inclusions depend on the operator, route, and package. Guided itineraries commonly include mountain meals and either camping equipment or hut accommodation, but confirm the precise inclusions, exclusions, and equipment list before booking.
